This Is My First Time, What do I do?

Make an appointment to see a Professional Hair Extension Technician.  They will advise you on how your hair extensions are applied.  The most important part of hair extensions is the right hair and the right technique.  Hair is produced in different parts of the world and it is important that you get the right hair to match your own hair type.

What Colour Should I Choose?

In order to get the exact colour for your hair a colour match has to take place.  Your Professional Hair Extension Technician will perform this at the time of consultation.  The Technician will match your hair from the middle to the ends.  Never purchase hair which is the same colour as your roots as it is always darker.  The blending of your hair from the bottom is most important.

Can I Mix Several Colours?

Mixing colours is a brilliant idea.  Most people have more than one colour in their hair.  Blending several colours together gives a more natural look.  This is also a great way to create high lights or chunks of colour for fashion trends.

Can I Use Extensions to Add Texture and Colour to My Hair?

Yes, hair extensions are a great way of experimenting without chemically treating your own hair.

Is It Done With Real Hair?

Hair extensions are generally done with real human hair, however synthetic hair can be used but this is not very versatile and is not to be used with heat.

What Type of Hair Do You Use and Where Does it Come From?

This varies with different companies, but generally most companies use remi hair which is usually from China or India.  Remi means the cuticles are all in the same direction so this ensures the hair stays silky and smooth and does not matt if looked after correctly.  I currently use Chinese remy human hair.  European hair such as Spanish, Italian and Russian is also widely used for extensions, but this hair is very expensive due to it being ‘virgin’ hair that has never been chemically treated and last for up to a year.

Will Extensions Damage My Hair?

If your hair is not done by a properly trained Technician then damage can occur.  Also maintenance after your extensions have been done is an important part of the process.  Your Technician will run through this with you and should also supply you with an aftercare advise sheet.  Take care when brushing hair and washing hair and have regular check ups every four weeks.

How Much Hair Do I Need?

Most Technicians do a full service of supply and fit.  If you want to purchase hair yourself discuss this with the Hair Extension Technician as the amount needed varies due to different head shapes and sizes.

How Long Should They Last?

This depends on the method of application and the hair quality.  Generally hair extensions are to be worn for 3 months maximum, they can then be removed and a new set can be re-applied if you require but I recommend you wait a week or so giving you time to wash your hair and brush any bits of glue left out.  Leaving extensions in for longer than this can cause damage to your natural hair.

Will Hair Extensions Help Me Grow My Colour, Cut or Perm Out?

This is a great way to grow your hair out of any of the above.

What Is Bonding?

Bonding is when bulk or weft hair extensions are applied by using hair bonding agent or pre bonded tips.  This method can be done hot or cold.

How Do I Maintain Hair Extensions?

You treat hair extensions like your natural hair.  Shampoo your hair with a good quality shampoo and moisturising conditioner.  I recommend Dove Daily Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner.  Comb all the tangles out before shampooing hair.  Once shampooed and conditioned spray with a leave in spray especially for hair extensions.  This is called a protein spray, it puts back the protein lost from everyday life.  Your hair will look and feel enriched  and conditioned which will stop the hair tangling and make it easier to comb.  Looking after your hair extensions is very important because they don't produce natural oils and can become dry over time if not cared for in this way. Wash hair once or twice a week only if possible leave your hair to dry naturally.  Never sleep with wet or damp hair to avoid matting and possible damage to your natural hair.  Make sure you tie your hair back when sleeping so it doesn't matt.  Serum can also be used to moisturise your hair daily.

Can I Brush, Curl, Blow Dry, Straighten and Wash the Hair?

Yes you can do all of the above!  Use a heat protection spray when applying heat in any form to your hair as this puts a protective barrier on your hair and prevents the hair from frying.

How Do I Wash the Hair?

Wash the hair by tilting the head backwards and smoothing shampoo gently from the top to the bottom and rinse out.  Apply conditioner to the hair in the same manor as the shampoo by slowly smoothing the conditioner from top to bottom in one direction.  Always wash directly after swimming as the chlorine dries out the hair, can loosen the bonds and cause matting.  Always brush from the bottom upwards supporting the hair with your hand to prevent shredding and stretching.

Can I Colour or Perm the Extension Hair?

This is not advisable as the hair has already been processed.  Hair comes in different shades so you will easily find a match for your hair.  Virgin hair can be coloured but this will take it out of its virgin state and spoil the quality.

What Type of Products Should I Use?

Always use products that are very low in alcohol content or with no alcohol at all.  Alcohol dries out the hair and strips the hair.  Your Hair Extension Technician will be able to advise on products that are good to use on hair extensions.

Can I Remove Hair Extensions By Myself or Get a Friend to do It?

It is highly recommended that you get a trained Hair Extension Technician to remove your hair extensions.  If removed by an untrained person this can result in damage to the natural hair.

Why Does There Seem to be so Much Hair Shedding When Removing My Hair Extensions?

Your natural hair sheds on a daily basis as part of the natural process.  It is normal to lose up to 100 hairs a day!  Just because hair extensions are fitted does not mean this natural process stops!  In fact it continues.  With hair extensions your daily hair shed is trapped in the installation and not falling out in to your sink or latching on to your comb or brush as usual.  So when the extensions are removed, all of that normal hair shed is released and it appears as though a lot of hair is coming out all at once.  If you are wearing hair extensions for up to 12 weeks, that's a possible 8400 hairs that you have shed through the natural process.  It is very important to have a trained Hair Extension Technician remove your hair extensions and they will explain this natural process to you.

Can I go and Swim in the Ocean?

Yes you may go in swimming pools, hot tubs and the ocean.  It is best to wash your hair directly after any of these.  Avoid getting hair in salt water if you can as salt can take the moisture out of the hair and it will tangle.  Braid your hair very tightly if you are to go in salt water.  Add spray in conditioner after swimming.  Ask your Technician for full procedure if your unsure.

How Much Does it Cost?

The cost of hair extensions varies between length and the type of hair you have.
For example 14 inches of remi hair is going to be different to 14 inches of virgin  Russian hair.  The reason for this is the difference in quality of hair but this hair is very expensive.  Also hair comes in 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24 inches and the cost is determined by the different lengths.  18 inch is the most popular length.
